Virginia Tech’s 2024 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration: A Week of Inspiring Events

Blacksburg, VA – Virginia Tech is proud to announce its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, a week of events aimed at honoring the life and legacy of the influential civil rights leader. The celebration, which will take place from January 15th to January 21st, 2024, will feature a series of diverse and inspiring events that will engage the university community in meaningful dialogue and reflection.

This year’s celebration will kick off with a keynote address by prominent civil rights activist and author, Angela Davis. Davis, a professor emerita at the University of California, Santa Cruz, is known for her work in combating racial injustice and her dedication to social change. Her address, titled “Continuing the Legacy: The Fight for Equality and Justice,” will inspire attendees to take action and continue the fight for racial equality.

Throughout the week, there will also be a variety of workshops, film screenings, and panel discussions that will center around social justice, activism, and the ongoing struggle for equality. Additionally, there will be opportunities for community service and volunteerism, allowing students, faculty, and staff to engage in meaningful outreach activities in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to service and compassion.

“We are excited to bring the Virginia Tech community together for our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration,” said Dr. Juanita Rodriguez, Chair of the MLK Celebration Committee. “This week serves as an important opportunity for us to reflect on Dr. King’s vision and to recommit ourselves to the work of racial equality and justice. We hope that these events will inspire and empower our community to continue the fight for a more just and equitable society.”

The Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at Virginia Tech aims to honor Dr. King’s principles of nonviolence, diversity, and inclusion, and to inspire and unite the campus community in the pursuit of a just and equitable world. All members of the Virginia Tech community are encouraged to participate in this week of events and to help further the legacy of Dr. King.
