  • An inter-ministerial task force of the Union government has recommended that online gaming companies be required to utilize face recognition technologies to check the age of gamers, noting growing concerns about addiction to such applications, especially among children.

The World Health Organization officially recognized gaming disorder as a disease in 2018; the report was submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office in September; and in India, where the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) outlined a long list of harms experienced by affected children in 2021.

“Suicides have occurred in a number of Indian states, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, as a result of financial losses from real money online gaming. a copy of which was reviewed by HT, stated that there is no regulatory framework to oversee several areas of online gaming enterprises, such as establishing a grievance redressal process, adopting player protection measures, protecting data and IPR, and forbidding deceptive ads.

Many nations have tightened online gambling regulations and laws as a result of these concerns. For instance, China implemented new rules in 2019 that restrict how long players under the age of 18 may play games. He can only play for 1.5 hours between 8am and 10pm on weekdays, and he can only play for 3 hours on the weekends. One of the top gaming businesses in China, Tencent, employs facial recognition technology to impose these usage limitations.

“Anything a user receives from a loot box is based on chance, thus any rules for online gaming that use ‘loot boxes,’ ‘virtual cash,’ or other elements that make it easier for players to win should be similar to those for gambling. When addicted gamers are targeted for “skin gambling,” or the illicit sale of loot box items on black markets, such platforms represent a risk of money laundering.

There are some discrepancies in the report. Casual games that only use in-game cash (as opposed to those that use real money) might be exempt from the application of such regulations. app accredited. The task panel recommended that games that also pose hazards to national security should be included in the regulatory framework.

Reduce social harm “Any future regulations designed to reduce societal ills associated with internet gaming must focus on empowering players and parents. India must take note of the failures of nations like China and South Korea to implement strict regulations, such as attempts to restrict playing time. Instead, Vivan Sharan of the tech think tank Koan Advisory said, “We must keep developing our own distinctive template for digital governance, one that prioritizes harm reduction over general prohibition and user agency over digital paternalism.
