Aberdeen introduces a new method for skin cancer treatment

  • Aberdeen Dermatology Associates recently introduced image-guided superficial radiation therapy, a non-surgical technique used to treat common skin cancers, for the first time in South Dakota. Image-guided SRI uses ultrasound and radiation to more accurately treat non-melanoma skin cancers. Dermatologist Ty Hanson says it’s a much less invasive treatment.

“First, there is no anesthesia. There are no needles. I don’t have a knife because I don’t cut it. No anesthesia to consume. No need to change the dressing. It doesn’t really interfere with your day, your time, or your life,” said Dr. Hanson. It also means fewer side effects. “In my other patients, radiation dermatitis, such as redness, scaling, and peeling, is often seen, and in addition, it can be infected. You have to scrape the tissue off, and that’s the beauty of it,” said Dr. Hanson.

He had a 99.3% cure rate for this technique. Easier and more convenient treatments are important, says Dr. Hanson’s skin cancer diagnosis rate is on the rise “The good news is that other cancers, lung cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, are going down, but skin cancer is up.

Janice Perrion previously had melanoma skin cancer. The removal left her with 13 stitches. “I came in and had a spot on my head. They did a biopsy and sent it in. It was basal cells. They suggested this radiation.” I didn’t need surgery. I would love it,” Perion said.

Perrion is undergoing image-guided SRT treatment, traveling 44 miles three times a week. She says it’s much easier than surgical removal.
“It’s fast and you don’t feel it. No sensation at all. It’s super easy and you don’t have to cut it,” he says Perrion. Approximately 20 treatments with image-guided SRT are recommended, allowing patients to complete treatment in as little as 5 weeks.
