  • The Sims 4 is now officially free to play for everyone after EA and Maxis announced the news last month. The Sims 4 will be completely free to play starting on October 18 across all platforms, including PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. The game will therefore be available for free to everyone who has not yet paid for it on their preferred platform. This only applies to the base game, though, which had a starting price of about £40.

There are still fees associated with content expansion packs and other game packs. EA and Maxis are giving away Desert Luxe, the game’s most recent downloadable content (DLC), for free until October 17th to players who already buy the original game. “With The Sims 4 now free to play, our team is more focused than ever on developing new and meaningful The Sims 4 experiences for players, and for the foreseeable future, we’re keeping packs, We will continue to develop and release kits, The Sims Delivery Express Drops. The developer said in a blog post shared at the time of the announcement:

The Sims 4 was his first release in 2014 and has grown to become one of his most popular life-sim games in the genre. Since launch, 12 expansion packs have been released, each with their own theme, plus 12 of his smaller game packs.

Maxis plans to continue developing his DLC for the game. Elsewhere, EA officially confirmed during its Behind The Sims Summit livestream yesterday (October 18) that The Sims 5 is in development but won’t be released for “several” years. Codenamed Project Rene, his EA called the game “Next-gen Sims his gaming and creative platform,” and shared some in-progress screenshots showing the mechanics of the new build.
