Amazon stops manufacturing the Glow video calling device

  • Amazon.com Inc. is discontinuing its pandemic-era children’s video calling device amid slowing sales and shifting consumer behavior.
    Launched a year ago, Amazon Glow came out of the company’s Grand Challenge Moonshot lab. It seemed like the perfect product during the pandemic: a screen and projector combination that would help kids make time to play games, read, and paint with distant relatives.

However, sales have been slow, and Amazon is now trying to assign the employees who worked on the gadget to other roles. “At Amazon, we think big, experiment, and invest in new ideas to delight our customers,” said Amazon spokeswoman Christy Schmidt. We are continuously evaluating our capabilities and potential, and are making regular adjustments based on those evaluations, and will be sharing updates and guidance with Glow customers in the near future.”

Amazon has taken a number of steps to keep costs down amid slowing sales growth, including closing warehouses and freezing corporate hiring in retail stores. Reviewers praised the device’s concept, but felt it was unfinished.The monthly subscription to Amazon services for kids and the recommendation that the person on the other side use a tablet rather than a smartphone were also criticized. It may have limited its appeal.

Amazon’s device group has produced hits like the Echo smart speaker and Fire Streaming Sticks, but it also has a history of launching devices that seem purposeful. The voice-activated microwave oven launched in 2018 was never received by buyers, and Amazon’s effort to create its own smartphone, the Fire phone, launched in 2014, remains the biggest failure yet. increase.

Amazon doesn’t disclose electronics sales data, but Glow’s retail page has about 500 customer reviews, a low figure even compared to Amazon’s niche and experimental offerings. Glow was heavily discounted on Tuesday, selling it to members of Amazon’s Prime program for $150, 55% off its list price. It was unavailable later in the day.
