BT Launches NB-IoT Network to Support UK Smart Cities: A Game-Changer for Urban Connectivity

  • B.T. has launched its NB-IoT network to support smart cities and industries in the UK, covering 97% of the population.
  • The network leverages the infrastructure of the mobile network and promises to revolutionize sectors like utilities, construction, and the public sector.
  • BT’s NB-IoT network seamlessly integrates assets like street lighting and sensors into smart grids for improved efficiency and cost reduction.

B.T. has recently announced the launch of its NB-IoT network, a move that is expected to support the growth of smart cities and industries in the UK. The network, which boasts an impressive coverage of 97% of the UK population, leverages the infrastructure of the mobile network. This new low-power networking technology holds great promise for revolutionizing various sectors, including utilities, construction, and the public sector. By securely and reliably connecting devices, NB-IoT can automate numerous processes that currently rely on manual intervention.

One significant impact of BT’s NB-IoT network is its ability to seamlessly integrate low data demand assets such as street lighting and groundwater sensors into a smart grid. This integration not only extends the battery life of these assets but also promises greater efficiency and cost reduction by automatically detecting water leaks in infrastructure.

The rollout of this network marks an important milestone in BT’s efforts to drive the evolution of smart cities. It enables a wide range of use cases aimed at monitoring and optimizing energy consumption, storage, and distribution. Additionally, the agricultural sector stands to benefit from IoT connectivity through applications such as sensors to monitor haystack temperature and mitigate fire risks as well as ensuring livestock safety through door sensors.

Chris Keone, MD at BT X Division, emphasized how businesses are increasingly realizing the benefits of IoT applications. He highlighted that BT’s UK-wide NB-IoT network opens up a wide range of connectivity solutions for monitors, sensors, and other smart devices.

In this context of enriching BT’s existing IoT portfolio with offerings tailored to meet the needs of UK businesses—such as eSIM and IoT National Roaming SIM—the introduction of this network further expands connectivity options for customers on the move or located in remote locations.

Keone concluded by stating that whether building smart cities or reducing carbon emissions, their network will provide customers with reliability and efficiency.
