  • Mississippi State University’s Institute for Clean Energy Technology showcased its nuclear filtration technology at a US House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus event. The center manages a nuclear containment ventilation testing programme, ensuring filter and confinement systems are effective and safe. It specialises in the testing and advancement of High Efficiency Particulate Air filters for use in nuclear facilities across the US.
  • ICET’s test beds allow researchers to replicate accident conditions at nuclear facilities and evaluate how filters perform. Working with the Department of Energy and filter manufacturers, ICET is currently the only test programme of its kind with a fully certified nuclear quality assurance programme, providing data that shapes industry standards. ICET’s filter testing has resulted in improved designs used in many facilities with radioactive materials.
  • MSU is taking a leading role in developing and testing innovative solutions to environmental challenges. ICET’s work on nuclear filtration technology is an example of how the university is collaborating with government agencies and industry partners to solve real-world problems. The showcase hosted by the US House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus highlighted ICET’s expertise in nuclear filtration technology and provided an opportunity for the center to showcase its capabilities to government leaders and learn about other innovations being developed in the field.

The U.S. House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus recently held an event that highlighted Mississippi State University’s Institute for Clean Energy Technology (ICET) and its efforts to advance nuclear energy research and development.

The event featured remarks from Rep. Chuck Fleischmann (R-Tenn.), the co-chair of the Nuclear Cleanup Caucus, and Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), as well as MSU officials and industry leaders.

ICET director Tom Vukovich and research engineer Linjing Chen provided an overview of the institute’s research initiatives, including its work on developing advanced nuclear technologies, such as small modular reactors and high-temperature gas-cooled reactors.

In addition, ICET highlighted its partnerships with industry stakeholders and government agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, to advance the use of nuclear energy in a safe and sustainable manner.

“The Institute for Clean Energy Technology is a vital part of our nation’s efforts to develop innovative solutions to the challenges posed by nuclear energy,” said Rep. Fleischmann. “Their work is critical to advancing the next generation of nuclear technologies and ensuring that we are able to safely and responsibly manage our nuclear waste.”

The event also provided an opportunity for lawmakers and industry leaders to discuss the role of nuclear energy in achieving U.S. energy and security goals, as well as the importance of continued investment in nuclear research and development.

“Nuclear energy has the potential to play a significant role in meeting our nation’s energy needs and reducing our carbon footprint,” said Rep. Luján. “By supporting institutions like the Institute for Clean Energy Technology, we can advance these technologies and ensure that they are safe, reliable, and cost-effective.”

Overall, the event was a successful platform for highlighting the important work being done at the Institute for Clean Energy Technology and the role that nuclear energy can play in shaping a more sustainable and secure future.
