Google demonstrates upcoming AI search features while Bard watches from the sidelines

According to Raghavan, “Search is still our biggest moonshot, and it’s evasive due to continuously shifting expectations and developing technology.”

Talk of Google’s recently announced ChatGPT rival, Bard, was mentioned at the event hosted by Prabhakar Raghavan, SVP for search, Assistant, ads, and other products at Google. However, the event didn’t center on Bard; rather, it went over a number of new ways Google is combining different types of search – such as text, speech, and images – into a single multimodal AI-driven system.

The Googlers Raghavan brought on stage discussed a number of new AI features that will be added to the company’s various search channels.

Speaking of speech, Google claims that its experiments with zero-shot language learning have been successful and that it will “soon” add machine translation for more than two dozen languages.

A significant portion of the presentation was devoted to Google Lens, with VP of search Liz Reid revealing that “search what you see” features will soon be available for Lens, allowing users to ask Google Assistant to determine the content of any image they find online or receive via text message.

Raghavan said Bard is currently in limited release with trusted testers who are putting it through its paces before a wider release and is powered by a lightweight version of LaMDA that would allow it to be deployed and used in more places.

Unfortunately, Raghavan was silent on a longer Bard release window, which is fantastic for Microsoft. Although it still isn’t generally accessible, its ChatGPT-powered version of Bing at least has a public waitlist.

Multisearch with Lens, a feature that was introduced last year and allows users to search an image with text prompts (such as, “this shirt in a different color”), is now available globally, according to Reid. It is also offering localized results for users in the US, with plans to make that feature available globally in the future. According to Raghavan, a new feature will enable Google’s new visual translation tools to “translate the whole picture, not just the text.” According to Raghavan, the new feature will allow text to be translated, removed, and then re-added to an image without the need for a background block that is blurred to cover up missing image pixels.

With AI filling in the visual gaps, text can now be added back, according to Raghavan, but only on Android devices. According to Chris Phillips, VP and GM for the Geo team, Google Maps is getting a new “Immersive View” that uses AI to “fuse billions of street view and aerial images to create a 3D model of the world.”

The expectation going into today’s event was that we would learn more about Google’s Bard, and we did, but not a lot. Raghavan reaffirmed much of what was already known about Bard, such as the fact that LaMDA powers it, that it provides users with bullet-lists of information to aid in decision-making, and that it pulls data from the internet rather than relying solely on a pre-trained model with a small data set.

Unfortunately, Raghavan was silent on a longer Bard release window, which is fantastic for Microsoft. Although it still isn’t generally accessible, its ChatGPT-powered version of Bing at least has a public waitlist.

Raghavan said Bard is currently in limited release with trusted testers who are putting it through its paces before a wider release and is powered by a lightweight version of LaMDA that would allow it to be deployed and used in more places. Additionally, he claimed that Bard was perfect for addressing “NORA” queries, or those with No One Right Answer, because the generative AI powering it can comprehend the big picture, consider various perspectives, and explore various angles.
