Google is about to release artificial intelligence (AI) for Gmail and Google Docs

In Gmail and Google Docs, you’ll be able to type a few words about a topic, and the apps will automatically create drafts. The company posted a GIF using a job posting as an example. The user enters “regional sales rep job opening” and in a second, Docs presents a page of formatted text with sections filled out to describe the job, responsibilities, and qualifications.

Google says it will be rolling out these features to a “limited group of trusted testers” over the next few weeks. When released to over 3 billion Gmail and Google Docs users, more people will be exposed to the latest generation of artificial intelligence technology than ever before.

“We are now at a critical point in our AI journey,” said Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian in a blog post. “Disruptions in generalized AI are fundamentally changing the way people interact with technology — and at Google, we’ve responsibly developed great language models that can be integrated into our products safely.Today, we are excited to share our first progress.

With Google’s upcoming business tools, companies are sure to create a multitude of AI applications. Google will be testing two new features in Google Cloud. First, there are more options for Vertex AI – a platform used by businesses to deploy machine learning models – which will soon include support for models that generate images, text, and even graphics, audio, and video (although the latter two are “coming soon”, Google hasn’t included a timeline). Cloud users will also benefit from a new AI application builder capable of developing completely new AI applications in “minutes or hours”.

Developers are also spoiled. Similar to Cloud’s general AI app building options, developers will have access to new tools that make it easier for advanced users to test and build AI applications. The new PaLM API allows developers to build on Google’s existing language models. PaLM includes a feature called MakerSuite that helps developers test their projects by changing AI prompts on the fly, testing fake data, and tweaking algorithmic models.

The company published a completely separate blog post on the PaLM API and MakerSuite, showing that the company is very interested in helping external developers implement new AI projects.
