  • The Indian competition watchdog penalized Alphabet Inc.’s Google 13.38 billion Indian rupees ($161.95 million) for engaging in anticompetitive conduct on Thursday and imposed a change in strategy for the Android platform. Google used its hegemony in areas like online search and the Android app store to defend the positions of its applications like Chrome and YouTube in mobile Web browsers and online video hosting.

Additionally, CCI forbade Google from entering into specific revenue-sharing arrangements with smartphone manufacturers, saying that these agreements had aided Google in securing search service exclusivity “to the utter exclusion of competitors.” Regarding the order, Google declined to comment. “Markets should be permitted to compete on merits, and it is the dominant actors’ (in this case, Google) responsibility to ensure that their behavior does not impede this competition on merits.”

A number of antitrust lawsuits against the American company are pending, and Indian tech sector regulations are being tightened. Separate investigations into Google’s business practices in the smart TV industry and its in-app payment mechanism are being conducted by competition regulators.

Two young Indian antitrust researchers and one of his law students complained, which led to the start of his Android-related probe in 2019. The situation in India is comparable to Google’s in Europe. He imposed a $5 billion fine in this case for requiring the maker to pre-install apps on his Android smartphones.

India on Thursday gave Google the go-ahead to allow smartphone users to delete pre-installed programs like Google Maps and Gmail.
Additionally, CCI has asked Google to let consumers choose their favorite search engine while configuring their phone for the first time.
