  • The Illinois House has approved the construction of small modular reactors, overturning a moratorium in place since 1987.
  • The legislation allows for the construction of small modular reactors limited to 300 megawatts or less beginning in January 2026, with an emphasis on safety and oversight by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
  • Nuclear energy is seen as a potential part of the state’s clean energy generation portfolio, as Illinois aims for carbon-free power production by 2045.

In a groundbreaking move, Illinois lawmakers have approved the development of a new nuclear reactor in the state, aiming to address safety concerns and meet the growing demand for carbon-free energy. The new reactor, which will be built by a consortium of energy companies, is set to be the first of its kind in decades and will utilize advanced technology to enhance safety measures.

The decision comes amidst a push for greener and more sustainable energy sources, as well as a recognition of the critical role that nuclear power plays in reducing carbon emissions. While some have raised concerns about the potential risks associated with nuclear energy, proponents argue that the new reactor will incorporate state-of-the-art safety features and undergo rigorous regulatory oversight.

Governor J.B. Pritzker, who championed the project, hailed the approval as a significant step towards a cleaner and more reliable energy future for Illinois. He emphasized the importance of modernizing the state’s energy infrastructure to meet the challenges of climate change, while also creating new job opportunities and supporting economic growth.

The development of the new nuclear reactor is expected to generate significant investment in the state, as well as create high-skilled jobs in the energy sector. Additionally, it will contribute to Illinois’ efforts to meet its carbon reduction goals and transition towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy mix.

As the project moves forward, stakeholders will continue to engage with local communities and environmental groups to ensure that safety and environmental concerns are addressed. The approval of the new nuclear reactor marks a significant milestone for Illinois and reaffirms the state’s commitment to advancing clean energy technologies while prioritizing safety and environmental stewardship.
