  • On Thursday night, several locals persisted in their opposition to carbon capture wells and enacted two moratoria to impede the use of the technology in their areas. The Livingston Parish Council has already approved a temporary one-year ban on so-called “Class V wells” and “Class VI” injection wells used to store carbon (wells used for carbon injection). a similar suspension was approved. – Dangerous fluids.

Although Class V wells have multiple purposes, the Board opposes their specific use as test wells to survey formations prior to injecting CO2.

This process (a corporate data collection step) takes place before a carbon capture well is approved.

In nearby St. Helena, council members voted for a moratorium on his CO2 capture injection wells, as Livingston Parish did in his early September. A St. Helena police jury deputy said, “I think our community is safer in accepting that we don’t know what the damage will be in five or 10 years, so it’s best that it’s gone. I think so,” he said. President Ryan Byrd said after the meeting:

Carbon capture and sequestration is the process by which industrial facilities capture carbon emissions and bury them deep underground in injection wells.

He added that rumors of St. Helena businesses looking for future projects have led them to adopt a moratorium as a safety precaution, but added that the community has no official carbon capture projects.

Livingston Parish is considering two carbon capture projects.

Oxy Low Carbon Ventures, a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum, will build a carbon capture facility near the Holden area. Company officials say they hope to have the facility online by 2025.

Air Products will build a blue hydrogen production facility near the Burnside area of Ascension Parish that will convert natural gas into methane. The resulting carbon dioxide is trapped and pressurized, turning it into a liquid. The liquid is injected deep underground into the parish wells of Livingstone, St. James, St. John the Baptist and Tanguipahoa.

State land for this project includes the Maurepas Swamp Wildlife Management Area and Lake Maurepas. The plan has disrupted many residents in the communities of Livingstone and Tanguipahoa. Kinnion Bankston, an Albany area resident who has voiced opposition to carbon capture, explained how the wells could harm lake crabs and fishermen, cause them to lose their jobs, and the value of their assets. petitioned the council to consider Local family and community tourism industry.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is not a great project for Lake Morepas,” he said. “For Livingston Parish, we have nothing to lose and nothing to gain from this project.”
