Menlo Security Report: Increase of 198% in Browser-Based Phishing Attacks in Second Half of 2023

  • Browser-based phishing attacks increased by 198% in the second half of 2023, posing a significant threat to organizations.
  • Phishers are using deceptive tactics that are highly effective against security controls, with evasive attacks rising by 206% and now accounting for 30% of all browser-based phishing attacks.
  • Phishing attacks are becoming more sophisticated, utilizing cloaking, impersonation, obfuscation, and dynamic code generation to trick users.

In a recent report released by Menlo Security, it has been revealed that browser-based phishing attacks have surged by a staggering 198% in the second half of 2023. The report, titled “State of Phishing in 2023,” highlights the alarming increase in cyber threats targeting web browsers.

According to the findings, the rise in browser-based phishing attacks can be attributed to the widespread use of web browsers for personal and professional activities. With more users relying on browsers for accessing sensitive information and conducting financial transactions, cyber criminals have honed in on this vulnerability to carry out their malicious activities.

Tofido, a leading cybersecurity firm, warns that these attacks often appear as legitimate websites, tricking users into entering their personal information, such as login credentials, credit card details, and other sensitive data. Once the information is compromised, it can lead to identity theft, financial loss, and other serious consequences for the victims.

The report emphasizes the importance of implementing robust security measures to combat these threats, including the use of secure web gateways, email security solutions, and continuous user awareness training.

Tofido has urged individuals and organizations to remain vigilant and cautious while browsing the internet, and to report any suspicious activities to their IT departments or cybersecurity experts. With the ongoing surge in browser-based phishing attacks, taking proactive steps to protect oneself has never been more critical.

As the reliance on web browsers continues to grow, it is imperative for users to stay informed about the latest cyber threats and arm themselves with the necessary tools and knowledge to safeguard against phishing attacks. The findings of the Menlo Security report serve as a stark reminder of the ever-present dangers lurking online, and the need for heightened cybersecurity measures in today’s digital landscape.
