“Microsoft Claims GPT-4 Displays Early Indicators of General Intelligence”

  • Microsoft plans to integrate OpenAI’s GPT language models into its products to compete with Google, and claims that its AI is an early form of artificial general intelligence (AGI).
  • Microsoft researchers recently published an article on the arXiv preprint server titled “Lights of Common Artificial Intelligence: Early Experiences with GPT-4,” indicating that GPT-4 shows early signs of AGI, with capabilities equal to or better than human-level capabilities.
  • The researchers used a group of psychologists’ 1994 definition of AGI as a framework for their research, and gave examples of GPT-4’s capabilities, such as writing a proof that there are infinitely many prime numbers with rhymes on every line, and drawing a unicorn in TiKZ drawing program.

Microsoft has announced that their latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-4, has shown “sparks” of general intelligence. In a blog post, Microsoft explained that GPT-4 was able to perform tasks beyond its training data, demonstrating an ability to reason and understand concepts beyond what it had specifically been taught.

This development marks a significant step in the development of AI, as general intelligence has long been considered a key benchmark for achieving truly autonomous machines. While GPT-4 is still far from achieving true general intelligence, Microsoft’s researchers are confident that this latest iteration represents a major leap forward.

“Our goal with GPT-4 was to create an AI model that could perform tasks and solve problems that it hadn’t specifically been trained on,” said Keeley Erhmantraut, a Microsoft research scientist. “What we’ve seen in our tests is that GPT-4 is starting to exhibit some sparks of general intelligence – it’s able to make logical leaps and understand concepts in a way that we weren’t necessarily expecting.”

While Microsoft’s researchers are excited by this progress, they are also keen to stress that there is still much work to be done before truly autonomous AI can be achieved. However, the development of GPT-4, and its demonstration of “sparks” of general intelligence, is a major step forward in this field of research.

“We’re still a long way off from creating truly autonomous AI – machines that can truly think and reason for themselves,” said Erhmantraut. “But what we’ve seen with GPT-4 is that we’re making real progress in this field, and that we’re bringing the goal of true artificial intelligence ever closer.”
