NASA achieves milestone by completing first phase of Lunar Nuclear Reactor Project

“The successful completion of the first phase of the Kilopower project is a significant step forward in advancing NASA’s goals for sustainable exploration of the moon and beyond,” said Jim Green, director of NASA’s Planetary Science Division.

The next phase of the project will involve further testing and refinement of the reactor technology to ensure its safety and reliability for use in future lunar missions. NASA envisions that the Kilopower reactor could be used to provide power for surface habitats, rovers, and other equipment on the moon, effectively reducing the reliance on solar power and enabling extended stays on the lunar surface.

“The development of a reliable nuclear power system for the moon will be a game-changer for future exploration missions,” said Steve Jurczyk, associate administrator of NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate. “It will enable us to conduct scientific research, establish infrastructure, and support human exploration in a sustainable and efficient manner.”

With the successful completion of the first phase of the Kilopower project, NASA is one step closer to realizing its vision of establishing a sustainable human presence on the moon and paving the way for future missions to Mars and beyond.
