Minister for Communications and Information Technology Parbat Gurung stated that the government has taken this decision in the interest of upholding the country’s social fabric and ensuring peace and stability. He emphasized that the government remains committed to protecting the rights and dignity of all citizens and will not tolerate any platform that threatens social harmony.

TikTok has faced criticism in Nepal and other countries for its role in spreading controversial and divisive content, as well as for its potential to be used as a tool for misinformation and propaganda. The app has also been at the center of controversies related to cyberbullying and concerns over the safety and privacy of its users.

The government’s decision to ban TikTok has been met with mixed reactions, with some applauding the move as a necessary step to protect society, while others have expressed concerns about the impact on freedom of expression and the rights of users.

In response to the ban, TikTok has stated that it is committed to working with the Nepal government to address any concerns and ensure compliance with local regulations.

This ban follows similar actions taken by other countries in recent years, highlighting the growing global concern over the potential impact of social media platforms on social harmony and stability. With the ban in place, it remains to be seen how this will affect the digital landscape in Nepal and what alternative platforms will emerge to fill the void left by TikTok.
