New tech allows Fulton school buses to turn the traffic lights green

The data showed that both school buses achieved a “significant and measurable reduction” in travel time, according to Kimley-Horn, the firm that prepared the study report. “Applying these solutions to the nationwide fleet of approximately 500,000 school buses would result in significant time and fuel savings, as well as a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions,” said Bryan Mulligan, president of Applied Information.

Applied Information, a developer of connected, intelligent transportation system solutions, has equipped two school buses, one diesel-powered and one propane-powered, in Alpharetta, Georgia, with Connected Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology. The technology allowed the school buses to request priority for green lights at 62 traffic signals along their routes while each served students in the Fulton County School System.

Officials also say the technology can help improve student behavior on buses and address the shortage of school bus drivers experienced by about 86% of school districts in the United States. “The pilot project has shown that we can use this technology to make our fleet more efficient and safely transport more students in less time – all while reducing fuel costs and protecting the environment,” said Trey Stow, director of transportation – operations for Fulton County Schools.

According to Stow, the district’s school buses use about 25,000 gallons of fuel per week. Given the continued high cost of fuel, Stow says the district can realize “significant” savings over the course of a year with this technology.
