Tech News Summary:

  • Oklahoma’s Career Tech Skills Center Program provides vocational training for inmates to acquire marketable skills for successful reintegration into society.
  • The program has a recidivism rate of less than 10%, significantly lower than the national average.
  • Other states, such as Texas, are following suit with similar programs to reduce recidivism rates and make communities safer.

In the wake of numerous natural disasters and economic downturns, many communities across the country have struggled to rebuild and recover. However, for an unlikely group of individuals in Oklahoma, a unique program offers hope and a chance at a brighter future.

The Career Tech program, launched by the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, provides vocational training and educational opportunities to inmates who are preparing to reenter society. Through this program, inmates are able to learn valuable skills and obtain industry certifications in areas such as welding, construction, and automotive repair.

Since its inception, the Career Tech program has helped hundreds of inmates rebuild their lives and gain a sense of hope and purpose. Many program graduates have gone on to secure employment in their chosen field, with some even starting their own businesses.

One Career Tech graduate, John Thompson, credits the program with giving him a new lease on life. Thompson, who was serving a 15-year sentence for drug-related crimes, found his passion in welding and is now employed full-time in the field. “This program taught me that there’s more to life than just getting by,” he said. “It showed me that I have worth and that I can do something positive with my life.”

The Career Tech program is just one example of the transformative power of education and vocational training. By investing in these programs, communities can help to rebuild lives and create a brighter future for all.
