On tablets, Google Contacts won’t appear as crowded anymore

The bottom bar icons have been repositioned, including a floating taskbar for creating new contacts, a Contacts tab, a recently updated Highlights tab, and finally, Fix & manage, positioned vertically on the left handrail in this order. Tap the Contacts button to open a list of people you know in the middle left of the screen, with contact details fields appearing on the right. While the search bar at the top is half the width in the Contacts pane, it expands to the full-sized version while in the Highlights.

This update – version 4.3 – brings important usability-related changes to the design, primarily by moving the bottom tab bar to the left side of the screen, making it easier to access at the bottom of the screen. landscape mode, especially on large screens like on tablets. This design will also be useful in upcoming tablets like the OnePlus Pad, which has a unique 7:5 aspect ratio.

It’s unclear if this behavior is intentional or just an issue that could be fixed in a future update. Meanwhile, content from the Highlights and Fix & manage pages is centered on the screen, with the former leaving plenty of space either side of the process. The rollout seems to have begun, so if you have one of the great Android tablets out there (or use your Android apps with the awesome Chromebook), look forward to Google Contacts 4.3.
