Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said modern nuclear power plants use technology that is safe for the environment and does not pose a danger to people.
On Friday, he confirmed that US supplier of nuclear products and technology, Westinghouse, will help build the country’s first nuclear power plant.
At the same time, the prime minister tried to allay his concerns about the risks of using nuclear energy.
“Nuclear plants are being built today with completely new technology,” Morawiecki told public television on Sunday evening.
He announced that Poland plans to build three he-six reactor nuclear power plants “to ensure Poland’s energy independence”.
He said that thanks to technology developed in the United States, the reactor would go underground in case of danger, there would be no risk of a radioactive spill and no concern for the safety of local residents. “We are convinced that these latest technologies are very safe and very necessary for Poland,” said Morawiecki.
“Nuclear plants will help us become independent from markets, stock exchanges and extreme weather,” Morawiecki said.
He added that the construction of nuclear power plants does not prevent the acquisition of energy from renewable sources.
“But we need stable energy. Today it comes from coal,” he said Morawiecki. In its revised Nuclear Energy Plan for 2020, Poland plans for her 6-9 GW of nuclear capacity, with the first reactor expected to come online in 2033.
