Regulators turn focus on AI to protect workers and consumers.

  • The US Consumer Finance Protection Bureau is working to ensure companies comply with the law when using AI as AI systems determine various aspects of people’s lives, including credit ratings, loan terms, bank account fees, hiring, housing, and working conditions. The regulator has fined banks over mismanaged automated systems that led to wrongful home foreclosures, lost benefit payments, and car repossessions.
  • Financial watchdogs are taking steps to ensure that companies adhere to the law when using AI systems as regulators are concerned about their impact on workers and consumers. Already, AI plays a significant role in determining credit ratings, bank account fees, loan terms, hiring, housing, and working conditions. They want protection for consumers and workers in this area, which it thinks cannot be exempted from existing laws.
  • The regulators say there will be no “AI exemptions” to consumer protection as they direct researchers and staff to identify the negative effects of technology on the lives of consumers and workers. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, companies must ensure that customers have accurate credit reports, dispute procedures, and error correction. Regulators aim to make companies accountable for their decisions and protect the rights of consumers and workers as technology evolves.

The exponential rise of artificial intelligence (AI) usage across industries has raised concerns about the impact on consumers and workers. With the potential for AI to automate tasks that were previously performed by humans, there are fears of job losses and potential harm to users due to the deployment of biased algorithms.

In response to these concerns, regulators are now taking action to safeguard consumers and workers from potential harm caused by AI. In the European Union, proposed legislation is under review, which would require companies to undertake risk assessments and provide explanations for AI decision-making systems.

In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission has also taken steps to address the issue, seeking public comments to analyze its enforcement approach to AI accountability. The commission is also considering a new policy that would require companies to provide more transparency into their AI systems’ decision-making processes.

Furthermore, the Department of Labor is considering the development of regulations for AI use in the workplace to ensure companies do not discriminate or violate workers’ rights.

The move towards AI regulation reflects many stakeholders’ concerns about the technology’s impact and the risks associated with it. As we move towards a more automated future, putting safeguards in place will be crucial to ensure that everyone is protected from the potential harmful effects of AI.
