The “asbestos mountain” has been dismantled, and the environmental cleaning of iPark87 at the former Tech City site in the Town of Ulster is progressing. “EPA has removed the remaining heaps of asbestos-contaminated material from this site, recovering this land for new economic development.”
“This is a significant moment for the Town of Ulster after a process that saw representatives from Ulster County and New York State play a significant role in cooperating with EPA to reach a resolution that paves the way for companies to proceed with new construction and restoration projects. This collective effort serves as a template for upcoming cleanups.
The “once-contaminated dumping site is now a cornerstone for the Hudson Valley’s economic future,” according to U.S. Senator Charles Schumer.
The former Ulster County executive, Congressman Patrick Ryan, stated that iPark87 “is positioned to be a shining example of the Hudson Valley’s economic rebirth.”
Building 1 must have its interior asbestos properly removed, and three sizable asbestos-containing debris piles must also be taken down and dumped off-site in a landfill authorized by the EPA. Building 1 is undergoing asbestos removal, and three asbestos piles containing material have been properly disposed of outside.
The EPA and iPark87, LLC, the current owner and developer of the former Tech City property, agreed to remove asbestos from the location in June 2022.
