The Xperia brand’s latest attempt at his PlayStation phone didn’t fare so well, but so much love remains for the 2011 Sony Ericsson Xperia Play with its excellent slide-out his controls. The lack of PlayStation branding in this teaser may indicate that Sony isn’t ready to capitalize on its gaming console legacy in the smartphone space, but we’re hopeful. We haven’t seen a new handheld game console from Sony since the PlayStation Vita model hit the global market in 2014.
Sony has announced a new Xperia event next week aimed at “pro-gamers and streamers.” Can we see the return of the PlayStation Phone. Sony Xperia’s Twitter account posted a tweet promising an “exciting announcement” streamed from Sony Xperia’s YouTube page on September 12th at 1pm Japan time (5am UK time). I don’t know the exact content, but I know that it is a product related to Xperia smartphones. The teaser video above shows a gamer playing the game on what appears to be a smartphone and wearing what appears to be Sony’s gaming headphones.
Highlights
Sony has recently put more focus on the streaming potential of its latest smartphones, and Remote Play lets you stream PS4 and PS5 games to your mobile device. Most recently, Sony partnered with Backbone to release the Backbone One PlayStation Edition, a special edition of his excellent Backbone One smartphone controller with an intuitive, streaming-focused interface. Since this was an iOS-only event, perhaps Sony has similar plans for the Android community.
