  • Japan and the UAE signed an agreement to transfer defense equipment and technology, marking the first such deal between a Middle Eastern country and Japan.
  • The agreement establishes a legal framework for both governments to hand over defense equipment and technology for joint research, development, production, as well as enhancing security and defense cooperation.
  • The signing of the agreement strengthens ties between two countries that have been working closely together in various fields, including energy, infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and culture exchange programs, and contributes towards regional security.

Tokyo, Japan – The governments of Japan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed a strategic partnership agreement that fosters the transfer of defense equipment and technology between the two countries. The deal is aimed at enhancing their defense capabilities amid rising threats and tensions in the Middle East.

Japan’s Defense Minister Tomomi Inada and her UAE counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum signed the memorandum of understanding during a ceremony held in Tokyo. The agreement formalizes an agreement that was reached in May of this year during a meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Sheikh Mohammed in Abu Dhabi.

Under the strategic partnership, Japan will provide the UAE with sophisticated defense products such as surveillance aircraft, military radar systems, and anti-tank missiles. In exchange, the UAE will share its expertise in military logistics and maintenance, and other areas of defense technology.

The partnership is seen as a significant boost for Japan’s defense industry, which has been looking for ways to expand its market overseas. UAE, meanwhile, aims to diversify its sources for defense equipment beyond the United States and Europe.

In a joint statement released after the signing ceremony, the two countries expressed their commitment to promote “mutually beneficial cooperation” in the defense industry and pledged to explore new areas of collaboration in the future.

“We believe that this strategic partnership will contribute to the stability and security of the region, and to further strengthening the bilateral relations between our two countries,” the statement said.

The agreement between Japan and the UAE follows similar defense deals that Japan has signed with other countries in the region, including Vietnam and the Philippines, amid growing concerns over China’s assertiveness in the South China Sea.

The UAE, for its part, has been expanding its military presence and influence in the Middle East in recent years, playing an active role in the coalition fighting the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq, and leading a military campaign in Yemen.

The strategic partnership between Japan and the UAE is expected to deepen their security cooperation and contribute to regional stability.
