  • Derek Peterson is a senior at Shawnee State University this year and plans to graduate next spring after seeing the many doors his degree has opened for him. Peterson, who specializes in games and simulation art, first became interested in college after learning that he had qualified for state studies and saw opportunities within his program for nationally recognized games. “I learned so many new skills. I had no idea how much this degree would cost,” he said.

During his time at SSU, Peterson was involved in several student clubs and organizations and was able to develop valuable communication and leadership skills. “I am a member of the Zombie Educational Defense Club and assisted with the student programming committee, Circle K International, as his assistant to the resident for one year. Today, Peterson is a member of Rotaract and serves as treasurer and secretary for the university’s dungeon crawlers.

“I am responsible for managing funds, preparing for events, planning rooms, and attending student council meetings to find out more about what is happening on campus and all these new events with members of my club.

As a major, Peterson appreciates the many skills his program has given him to prepare him for his future. “Motion he really enjoyed doing capture, animation, high-definition modeling, and more,” he said. SSU’s games program is divided into his two main areas of game & simulation art and digital simulation & game engineering technology.

These two separate but linked programs teach students how to work individually and as a team while developing the skills they need to create the best career paths for them. The program has been nationally ranked the Princeton Review’s top gaming program in the United States and Canada for the 12th consecutive year.
