Netflix wowed its users with one of the highest rated indie games. Over the past year, Netflix has attempted to enter the gaming business in a rather unique way. Unlike most gaming platforms, Netflix already has a very large user base with subscribers to watch movies and TV shows.
Netflix thought it could reach that audience by also offering games for mobile devices. Since launching the idea in 2021, it has released some pretty good mobile games, and plans to release a new Assassin’s Creed game on the platform in the future. Netflix has also acquired Night School Studios, the team behind the popular indie game Oxenfree. At Netflix’s Tudum event, the streamer announced that Oxenfree will be available on the service starting today.
iOS and Android devices with an active Netflix subscription can download the immersive, story-driven adventure game at no additional cost. Games on Netflix require no extra layers and are ad-free. They are just extensions of Netflix’s content offerings. Called Oxenfree: Netflix Edition, this new version also includes much-requested localization support with over 30 languages for game subtitles.
Sean Krankel, co-founder and studio director at Night School Studio, said, “OXENFREE is such a special game to so many people and launching on Netflix is a really exciting opportunity for us to introduce Alex’s story to even more people – maybe even someone who never thought they would love playing a game.”
Players have the opportunity to become familiar with this environment and catch up in time for the sequel as the team is presently hard at work on Oxenfree II: Lost Signals. If you play Oxenfree for the first time and become a fan or investor, Netflix also sells Oxenfree items in its online shop. This type of unexpected launch is obviously a significant win for the service and hopefully will promote a fantastic game to a whole new audience.
“We have the best resources to introduce OXENFREE: Netflix Edition to a broad audience because we are a Netflix games company. The introduction of OXENFREE: Netflix Edition provides gamers worldwide with the best narrative experience in their native language, which has been a long-standing request from our community.”
