The display is slightly smaller at 6.4 inches (the previous model had a 6.5-inch screen), but retains the same 2,400 x 1,080 resolution. However, this year Samsung bumped up the maximum brightness to 1,000 nits. It should be noticeable in daylight, and the company has gone even further by adding a vision booster to improve visibility when the surroundings are a little too bright. The screen can go up to 120Hz, but the variable refresh rate saves battery life. This is another great screen from Samsung that further narrows the gap between flagship and midrange. Bezel is the only thing that offers the game here.
There are no major changes from the Galaxy A53 to the A54, but there are some notable changes, including a redesign that aligns more closely with the premium Galaxy S family, and the camera’s metal detail sticks out independently from the back.
Samsung has also upgraded the A54’s processor, which runs on the company’s latest internal chip, the 5nm octa-core Exynos 1380. Samsung claims this will improve CPU task performance by 20% and GPU task performance by 26%. It was hard to push the phone to its limits during our hands-on, but we hope the A54 is a bit more powerful than last year’s A53.Samsung keeps the battery the same size as last year, which is a good sign. The two-day battery life was one of the strongest points when we tested the device.
In terms of imaging, it’s another triple camera array in this year’s A series. A 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization and an f/1.8 lens is flanked by a 12MP ultra-wide camera and a 5MP macro camera. Samsung also kept his 32-megapixel selfie camera in the 2023 update. Changes to the camera system, according to the company, include larger pixels (more detail and less noise) and optical stabilization that improves stability from his 0.95 degrees to 1.5 degrees. This is a noticeable improvement, especially if you shoot a lot of videos, and Samsung has built his Snapchat filters into the native camera app. You can see this in the main image at the beginning of this article. Syncs with your Snapchat account for easy access to all camera filters.
