The impact of little technology on cancer surgery is significant

  • Tiny seeds, about the size of a grain of rice, are making a big difference in treating breast cancer patients at Murrumbidgee.

The Murrumbidgee Local Health District is the first district in NSW to introduce his Magseed. The Magseed is a small stainless steel “seed” that is implanted in a breast cancerous tumor to mark the surgical site.

Regional Health Minister Bronnie Taylor said the successful implementation of this new technology is a testament to the quality of healthcare in NSW rural and rural areas.

“We have some of Australia’s best surgeons and medical professionals chosen to work in rural New South Wales. We are proud that our medical district is a regional medical district,” said Ms. Taylor. Griffith Surgeon Dr. Kate Fitzgerald said she is new to using the technology and has seen the difference it has made in Scotland and would love to see Magseeds for general patients in New South Wales.

“Having seeds gives me more flexibility about where to cut. Not only does it give me the best results in resecting the cancer, but it also makes it look as good as possible.”

“Usually, the thin wires that had to be placed on the day of surgery had to be placed by the radiologist and attached to the patient’s chest until they entered the operating room,” Fitzgerald.

Taylor thanked the Griffith Breast Cancer Support Group for their generous donation toward the purchase of his Magseed technology, and the group’s support helped make the technology available locally.

Kaye Mossman, president of the Griffith Breast Cancer Support Group, said he is thrilled the group’s fundraising efforts are contributing to this new technology.

“Through the generosity of the Griffith community, we are not only supporting our local patients at their individual cost, but we have enough money to make a significant donation to the Murrumbidgee Local Health District to fund this exciting new technology. We raised a lot of money,” Mossman said.
