Tech News Summary:

  • Eric Migicovsky may bring back Pebble but in the form of a small smartphone for the Tiny Android Phone community project.
  • The new phone should have a stock Android OS, a display smaller than six inches, and an iconic rear camera array.
  • The team aims to build a luxury phone with at least one mid-level Qualcomm chip, features like wireless charging, IP68 water resistance, and a ceramic coated aluminum frame or metal frame with a composite glass layer.

Pebble, the company that once wowed the world with its innovative smartwatch but eventually shut down in 2018, is making a comeback. Eric Migicovsky, the founder of Pebble, has announced plans to launch a tiny smartphone that runs on Android. This smartphone is said to be the “little Android phone of our dreams.”

Migicovsky revealed the news on Twitter, saying that this upcoming product will be a “tiny phone for busy people” and added that it would be full of features, despite its small size. While he didn’t provide many specifics about the device, it’s likely that it will carry some of the same design DNA as Pebble’s watches, which were praised for their simplicity, efficiency and long battery lives.

In a subsequent tweet, Migicovsky hinted that the device would be going up for sale through crowdfunding website Kickstarter, which is fitting given that Pebble’s smartwatches were some of the platform’s most successful campaigns.

Fans of the Pebble brand will remember that the company was acquired by Fitbit in late 2016, and it eventually shut down the service for its smartwatches in 2018. Since then, Migicovsky has been working on developing the product he originally envisioned for Pebble.

While the smartphone market is incredibly crowded, a tiny Android device with a focus on simplicity could certainly find a fan base. This will especially be true if it delivers a great balance between feature and convenience.

Migicovsky has proven himself to be an innovator in the past, and the Pebble smartwatches were beloved by many for their unique approach to smartwatch design. Let’s see if he can bring the same magic to a small Android phone.
