The sliding PC was unveiled during Samsung Display’s Intel Innovation keynote

  • At today’s Intel Innovation Keynote, Intel and Samsung Display showed the future of the sliding PC. His CEO of Samsung Display, JS Choi, appeared on stage with a 13-inch tablet, and by simply sliding the screen he transformed into a 17-inch display.

“We are launching the world’s first 17-inch slide display for PCs. This device meets the various needs of larger screens and mobility,” Choi said in his keynote speech. At least for now, Samsung seems to be ditching the foldable PC concept in favor of a sliding mechanism.

Before Microsoft ended support for Windows 10X on foldable devices, Intel was working and experimenting with different form factors such as dual-screen PCs and foldable PCs. While these form factors may look attractive, they are useless with poor software support.

Note that the recently introduced 13-inch display has a flexible display in addition to the sliding mechanism. Intel also announced new software called Unison that helps connect Intel-powered PCs to smartphones, and said it’s compatible with both Android and iOS.

Coming back to Slide PC, the device itself seems to be just a concept for now. Additionally, neither Samsung Display nor Intel have made any announcements as to whether the PCs will be available to general consumers.

Unison allows users to make and receive phone calls, share files and photos, send and receive messages, and receive notifications on their phone. If the software is not running, notifications are redirected to Windows Notification Center.
