  • Lee committed to scrutinizing language for subtle racism, rethinking interpersonal interactions and university structures based on what she learned from TRAIL.
  • Lee and other leaders presented a framework for advancing anti-racism strategy on campus to Virginia Tech’s Commission on Research, emphasizing the importance of working together.
  • Projects from spring TRAIL cohort members included ADA compliance reviews, diversity and inclusion training for university communicators, increased recreational sports opportunities for Black students, and inclusive recruitment and retention measures in the Division of Human Resources. This semester, TRAIL’s 27 participants include various campus leaders, demonstrating Virginia Tech’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Virginia Tech’s TRAIL Program has taken a bold step towards creating diversity and inclusion leaders, reaffirming its commitment to an anti-racism strategy. The Transformation, Inclusion, and Leadership (TRAIL) Program is designed to cultivate a diverse group of leaders who are equipped to promote inclusivity and equity within the university community and beyond.

The TRAIL Program was established as part of Virginia Tech’s broader efforts to address issues of diversity and racial equity on its campus. Through a comprehensive training and development curriculum, participants in the program are provided with the tools and resources necessary to become advocates for diversity and inclusion in their respective fields.

According to Dr. Menah Pratt-Clarke, Vice President for Strategic Affairs and Diversity at Virginia Tech, the TRAIL Program is a vital component of the university’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable environment. “The TRAIL Program is an important initiative that will help us further our goals of fostering a diverse and welcoming community at Virginia Tech,” stated Pratt-Clarke.

The TRAIL Program also aims to empower participants to challenge and address instances of racism and discrimination through proactive measures. By equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate and engage with issues of diversity and inclusion, Virginia Tech hopes to create a more harmonious and tolerant community for all its members.

In light of recent events and national conversations surrounding systemic racism and social justice, Virginia Tech’s TRAIL Program holds significant relevance. The program not only serves as a beacon for promoting inclusivity and diversity within the university, but it also paves the way for change on a larger scale.

As the TRAIL Program continues to develop and engage with a new cohort of leaders, Virginia Tech remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment for all. Through initiatives like the TRAIL Program, the university is taking meaningful strides towards creating a brighter, more inclusive future for its community.
