There will soon be a significant security change to Twitter

The user who has set up 2FA will have until Monday, March 20 to either opt-in to Twitter Blue so he keeps SMS 2FA, or disable it and set up 2FA for her with a third-party authenticator app.

Elon Musk’s social network announced last month that it would revoke access to his SMS-based two-factor authentication (2FA) for users who don’t pay for the company’s $8/month Twitter Blue subscription.

Luckily, changing your 2FA settings is a quick, easy and free process that takes less than a few minutes. Here’s what you need to know to keep your Twitter account secure. Basically, 2FA is an extra security measure that prevents your account from being hacked. The user can use not only a password, but also a second authentication method (e.g. B. A code sent to the phone via SMS text message.

This means that even if an attacker were to figure out your password and try to access your account, he would have to take one more step before gaining access.

Since Elon Musk took over Twitter last year, the company has cut costs wherever possible. The 2FA changes are a result of this, with Musk claiming in a tweet that scammers are costing the company $60 million a year in bogus SMS rates for him. On the company’s official page, which details the announcement, Twitter said it would be ditching phone number-based 2FA.

Changing your 2FA settings is easy. First, go to the Twitter app or desktop site settings page and select Security and account access. From there, select the “Security” option and follow the prompts to access his 2FA page.

For most people, especially his mobile users, the easiest way to set up 2FA is with an authenticator app. Popular and trusted apps are Google Authenticator, Duo Mobile, and Twilio’s Authy.

Once you’ve downloaded the app of your choice, follow Twitter’s instructions to link your account. Once this is done, your account will be set up.
