This Warhammer Boomer Shooter shotgun will quickly become your new favorite

It was an absolute blast. The guns – in this tier set include shotguns, shotguns and plasma pistols – are big and incredibly satisfying, and the game ensures you always have more targets to use with them. The shotgun in particular is a new timer for me, killing enemies with resounding explosions worthy of Ultramarine. The maps are simple and designed to be traversed, but packed with secrets and rewards for curious explorers to discover. It’s quick, it’s simple, it’s bloody fun, and it couldn’t seem to fit the heavy metal world of Warhammer. The fact that it has a dedicated button “scream at the enemies you will kill them” really sums up its vibe.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun makes everything gloriously simple. After a captivating and unsettling opening cutscene, the preview takes me to a planet full of Chaos cultists with a sword and a dream, and tells me to go there. Instantly, I ran across the map sending pixelated blood, looking for guns that would be banned by the Geneva Conventions, and inserting comic keys into the console to open doors to locations full of even deadliest enemies. more terrible.

Visually, it draws heavily from Doom – enemies are 2D creatures animated in a 3D world – but with modern lighting and particle effects combine to create something that really stands out. And a surprising array of enemy types, from Cultists and Chaos Space Marines to Pink Horrors and Plague Toads, means there’s always an ugly new enemy to get your attention (and your bullets). ).

Just as its aesthetic combines classic and modern techniques, the action is like a clever blend of Doom conventions with more modern FPS ideas. Boomer shooter purists might frown upon the cooldown reduction, dedicated grenade button, and melee attacks, but it all makes for an old-fashioned experience. but still accessible. If you like the idea of shooting monsters with big, high-speed guns, chances are you’ll love it, whether or not you’ve spent the last few years playing Dusk and Ultrakill.

And surely anyone who is a huge fan of Warhammer 40,000 will find a lot to love. Loyalty touches include pink horror split into blue horror of being killed, Nurgling design reminiscent of beloved minifigures, and a damage system built around power scores and the durability of the board game.

Boltgun hasn’t announced a release date yet, but what I’ve played has felt pretty full – hopefully it won’t be long before it’s sprinting through Steam, screaming and sucking mic blood.
