Houston, Texas – In a recent talk at the Ignite Conference, Brother Javier Reyes emphasized the urgent need for technology to be used to do good in the world. A Christian Brother with over 20 years of experience in education and technology, Brother Reyes urged attendees to use technology to address pressing social, economic, and environmental issues.
“Technology is a powerful tool that can help us address some of the major challenges facing our world – from climate change and poverty to education and healthcare,” said Brother Reyes. “But it’s not enough to simply have access to technology. We need to use it in ways that promote justice, compassion, and social responsibility.”
Brother Reyes pointed to a number of innovative projects that are using technology to make a positive impact. These include blockchain-based solutions for tracking the supply chain of goods and preventing child labor, machine learning algorithms to identify and help students who are at risk of dropping out of school, and mobile health clinics that bring medical care to underserved communities.
But while these projects offer hope, Brother Reyes stressed that much more needs to be done. “We can’t afford to be complacent or to just focus on the bottom line. As Christians and as global citizens, we have a duty to use technology in ways that promote the common good and protect our planet. And we need to act quickly, as the challenges we face are urgent and complex.”
The Ignite Conference, held annually in Houston, brings together Christian leaders, educators, and innovators to explore how technology can be used to advance the common good. This year’s event featured keynote addresses, workshops, and interactive sessions on topics ranging from social media and ethics to artificial intelligence and environmental stewardship.
