USM director of research development testifies before the Congressional Committee on Emerging Technologies

  • On Thursday, September 29, Dr. Henry L. Jones, Director of Research, Development, and Scientific Entrepreneurship at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), makes investments in cutting-edge innovations all over the nation.

Jones was led by Senators John Hickenlooper (D-Colorado), chairman of the Space Science Subcommittee, and Maria Cantwell (D-Washington), chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. He gave testimony prior to the convened full hearing. grew into. “Ensuring America’s Security” was the hearing’s theme.

“Leadership in Emerging Computing Technologies” highlights the continuous significance of his three key technology sectors in the 2022 Science Act and his recently passed CHIPS. These fields include distributed ledger technology (DLT), quantum information science (QIS), and artificial intelligence (AI) (DLT).

Applications in these fields are already changing or have the potential to change not only computing but also industry, transportation, national security, agriculture, healthcare, and other sectors. They also have wider social, ethical, and legal ramifications.

“Government program managers might assume that Boston or San Francisco is a safe bet if they have not seen the innovation going on our Gulf Coast, for example, and miss out on the effective, economical, productive ecosystems that build up our resiliency and creativity,” added Jones.

Mr. Jones emphasizes that the state of Mississippi will gain significantly from some aspects of CHIPS and the Science Act. The leadership of Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss), a key member of the Commerce Commission who assures the delivery of US technological investments, is primarily to thank for this.

Jones has a wealth of experience as an investor and entrepreneur who has contributed to the establishment of businesses in Silicon Valley, Chicago, Mississippi, and Alabama. Jones resided in Silicon Valley during the dot com boom in the 1990s after receiving a Ph.D. in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University. Jones founded the first business to produce cutting-edge online forestry products using research from a lab at Mississippi State University and the Landsat 7 satellite of the US government.

Jones worked at USM for six years as an adjunct professor before accepting his current position. He has worked as an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Mississippi for the past 16 years.
