  • Apple is introducing a new interface for iPhones in the upcoming iOS 17 update that will display information in the style of a smart-home display when the iPhone is locked and positioned horizontally.
  • The new view will display calendar appointments, weather updates, and notifications, and is part of a broader push by Apple to embed live information in more parts of its software, including the Apple Watch.
  • The iOS 17 update is expected to be released to consumers in 2023 and will include several other changes, including a dark background with bright text to make it easier to read and a horizontal interface for the iPad that is still in development.

In a major update to its popular operating system, Apple has announced that users with locked iPhones will be able to transform their devices into smart displays with the iOS 17 update. The new feature, which is set to roll out later this year, will enable users to access a range of information and services without unlocking their devices.

According to Apple, the smart display feature will offer a range of benefits to users, including the ability to view their calendar, weather forecast, and news headlines at a glance. The display will also be able to show information from third-party apps, such as social media notifications, flight information, and smart home controls.

Perhaps most excitingly, the smart display will also be able to show personalized recommendations based on the user’s habits and interests. For example, users who frequently listen to music on their iPhone may see album artwork or lyrics displayed on the lock screen, while avid readers may see book recommendations or news articles.

The iOS 17 update will also introduce a number of other new features, including improved voice recognition and integration with smart speakers and other connected devices. Users will also be able to customize their home screens with a variety of new widgets and app icons.

Commenting on the update, Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “We’re always looking for ways to make our users’ lives easier and more enjoyable. The smart display feature in iOS 17 is just one example of how we’re working to enhance the user experience and provide even more value to our customers.”

The iOS 17 update is set to be released later this year and will be available for a range of Apple devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.
