With the 7.00 firmware update, PlayStation 5 will gain cloud streaming capabilities and Discord integration

  • According to insider Tom Henderson, the PlayStation 5 firmware will soon be updated to version 7.00, which will include some significant new features.

The most surprising is that PlayStation 5 players will be able to stream their PS5 games rather than downloading them to save hard drive space. According to the report, the feature (codenamed Project Cronus in 2022) will be available only to subscribers of the newly introduced PlayStation Plus Premium tier.

The PlayStation 5 will also finally get the long-rumored full-fledged Discord integration. Some of you may recall that Sony announced a partnership with Discord in May 2021.

At PlayStation, we’re always looking for new ways to connect players all over the world, form new friendships and communities, and share fun experiences and lasting memories. In this spirit, we’re pleased to announce a new partnership with Discord, a communication service popularised by gamers and used by over 140 million people worldwide each month.

While PlayStation Network account integration was released in early 2022, voice chat integration with Discord is still not available, despite recent leaks indicating an impending release.

Our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord to your PlayStation 5 social and gaming experience. Sony Interactive Entertainment has made a minority investment as part of Discord’s Series H round to bring these experiences to life for our players. I was inspired by co-founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy’s lifelong love of gaming and our teams’ shared passion to help bring friends and communities together in new ways from our very first conversation. Empowering players to form communities and share shared gaming experiences is central to what we do, so we are thrilled to embark on this adventure with one of the world’s most popular communication services.

According to Tom Henderson’s anonymous sources, Sony will launch a public beta for PlayStation 5 firmware 7.00 in the coming days. However, the Discord integration will not be included in this beta testing phase.

The new PlayStation 5 update is set to go live on March 8th.
