With the opening of their fifth gaming studio, Netflix will enter the cloud gaming market

  • In 2022, Netflix has made big changes. Especially the latest take on online gaming. Netflix recently made its biggest move yet following the addition of indie hits like OXENFREE to its growing catalog. Netflix’s vice president of gaming, Mike Verdu, showcased the streaming company’s curiosity to explore the possibilities of his games in the cloud. Cloud gaming is a contentious issue among many online gaming companies, and Google’s failed attempt at Stadia has done him no good to market the idea to the typical gaming audience.

This new cloud gaming company is structured around a standalone business model, so it’s not a replacement for consoles. Verdu has seen how previous cloud gaming companies such as Amazon’s Stadia and Luna have failed with their business models, suggesting that Netflix’s model picks up where it failed. However, it’s unclear where Netflix’s cloud gaming will take them, given that the road is only just beginning.

Verdu also announced the opening of Netflix’s newest game studio in Southern California, spearheaded by Chako Sonny, former government producer of Blizzard’s Overwatch. “He could have done anything, but he chose to come here,” Verdu said. “Such people aren’t going into your organization to build the next big thing in gaming unless they feel like they’re really in it for good reasons in the long-term.”

Netflix has a total of five new gyms, all aimed at producing specific content using very different devices. Verdu has identified 55 video games in its library, both from its own licensed Netflix property. Verdu hopes its game library will likely hold 50% of Netflix’s IP.
