Areader is upset that console players are being forced to play cross-play games with PC owners, creating an uneven playing field.
In September 2018, when Fortnite became the first high-profile cross-platform game, the president took over. I and many players were excited because now I can play with my friends on various platforms.Epic Games, which has a large fan base, forced Sony to enable it as a last resort.
At the time, all I could think about was playing games with people I liked, wherever I wanted. It all sounded good on paper, and it still does. I advocate the licensing aspect of owning a game and being able to play it wherever you want, instead of multiple purchases that are possible with many games these days.
A problem I’m having and is becoming more common is PC gamers. They bring players to the table, but a good keyboard and mouse control system is only the beginning of the trouble.
Over the last year or so, we’ve added field-of-view sliders and keyboard and mouse support to a number of popular games on consoles, and I’d hate to see the console version effectively converted to the PC version. Can’t choose between cross-playing with everyone or just the console?
I’ve always championed the idea of crossplay, but console only. PCs seemed great in theory, but prone to abuse. Every time I lose to a PC player, I think in the back of my mind they might be cheating. It’s not my fault they lost, it could be because they’re using a keyboard and mouse, playing on an ultrawide monitor, or using aimbots.
You can keep everything that was added to the console and keep it as the armchair controller experience that left the PC almost 20 years ago. Having enjoyed Flight Simulator 2020 on both Xbox and PC, there is a definite case for cross-play in more cooperative games. I own a PC, so I can’t play on it. I prefer consoles.
