LG’s upcoming OLED TV makes noise without speakers, the company says

A typical 5.1 system consists of a center speaker with his four additional directional channels for left and right, and a subwoofer for bass. LG Display makes his OLED TV screens that are effectively used in all the best OLED TVs, including those from LG Electronics, but LG Display also sells screens to Sony, Philips and others embedded audio.
Less is known about the sound system layout of the Film CSO and OLED.EX panels. However, it reminds me of Sony’s Acoustic Surface Audio system found in the Sony A80K. Ultimately, there’s very little information about the Film CSO, so we can’t say how similar LG’s features will be, but we can speculate on how it might work for Sony. The Sony TV with Acoustic Surface Audio Plus has his four speakers on the front and dual actuators and tweeters on the back for added immersion.

LG Display has taken an unusual approach to audio on OLED displays by unveiling its new 97-inch OLED.EX TV panel at the K-Display 2022 (opens in new tab) event in Seoul, South Korea. The OLED.EX screen features LG’s new Film CSO (opens in new tab) (Cinematic Sound OLED) feature. This means that the display itself vibrates and produces sound without the need for dedicated speakers. Instead, a 5.1-channel sound system is built into the display, which the company says can create “cinematic immersion.”

Highlights

  • LG Display introduced his CSO technology to its 97-inch OLED screen, the “largest OLED TV panel ever produced.” Earlier this year, LG launched a 97-inch G2 OLED with a screen, so its presence wasn’t a surprise, but it’s the first time the screen has been seen in South Korea outside of use on this TV, certainly the first I’ve seen a new sound system packed out there. OLED EX technology will be first introduced in December 2021, and LG claims it can boost OLED brightness by up to 30%.

  • The actuator itself gently vibrates the screen and emits a sound, making sure the audio is in sync with the visual. Audio Plus can also be augmented with an amplifier so that the display can act as the main speaker. We reached out to LG and asked for more information about Film CSO. In particular, I would like to know how the sound system does not interfere with the display, assuming no actuators. We will update this story as soon as we hear back better and brighter.

Using different materials (especially deuterium) improves energy efficiency and allows for brighter and more accurate colors. LG Display also emphasizes that the OLED.EX panel uses “personalized algorithm-based EX technology.” This technology is designed to reduce image degradation on televisions. “From day one, a personalized algorithm examines people’s usage and viewing habits and predicts the degradation of his 33 million organic light-emitting diodes in each display, maintaining optimal brightness and performance at baseline. ‘said LG Display.
