  • The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, has threatened to withdraw ChatGPT from the EU if the bloc overregulates AI.
  • Altman cancelled a scheduled visit to Brussels where EU regulators are working on the EU AI Act, which could be the first set of rules globally to govern AI.
  • Lawmakers responsible for shaping the AI Act dispute Altman’s claims and say they won’t be “blackmailed” by American companies.

Lawmakers have expressed their criticism towards OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, after he warned of a possibility of resignation from the EU over concerns about the future of artificial intelligence. Altman, who is also a well-known venture capitalist, took to Twitter to voice his concerns and urge for more regulatory action on the technology.

In his tweet, Altman stated that he was “very worried” about AI regulation in the EU and that he was considering resigning from the OpenAI board in Europe. He further pointed out that the current regulations were not enough to manage the potential dangers of AI.

Several lawmakers have spoken out against Altman’s comments, accusing him of fear-mongering and undermining the EU’s efforts to create a balanced framework for AI regulation. Some lawmakers also criticized Altman for not providing a constructive solution but rather threatening the integrity of the EU.

In response to the criticisms, Altman defended his stance and clarified that he was not against AI regulation but instead, he was calling for better and more balanced regulatory policies. He emphasized that AI is an important technology with significant potential but must be managed properly to avoid negative repercussions, such as job losses and ethical concerns.

The debate over AI regulation continues to intensify, with lawmakers considering various methods to strike a balance between innovation and regulation. Altman’s comments have highlighted the growing divide between tech elites and regulatory frameworks, which could significantly influence the future of AI regulation.
