  • San Juan Regional Medical Center has reopened its cancer center with advanced treatment options and additional robotic surgery systems, expanding its arsenal of services and technology. Management said the cancer center now offers a level of service previously unavailable in the region, and that the surgical system is less invasive than standard surgery, making general surgery and urology less invasive. He says it can help patients heal faster.

The San Juan Regional Cancer Center has “reopened with new advanced technology to treat even the smallest cancers that were previously untreatable at home.” “The $5 million investment includes a CT scanner and linear accelerator collaboration,” spokeswoman Laura Werbner said in a release.

The CT scanner pinpoints the exact location of the tumor and “transmits that information to a radiation therapy machine, a linear accelerator, for precise treatment,” the press release said. “We’ve never had this technology before, so we can treat the smallest neurological tumors,” said Troy Fuhrman, director of the San Juan Regional Cancer Center. “Great treatment.  Before that he had to send some patients to Mayo for treatment. This technology has advanced to the point where it is now available in San Juan County. ”

Furman told the Daily Times that he and hospital staff have been very impressed with the support San Juan County has provided to the cancer center and that he is grateful to be able to provide advanced cancer care in the Corners area. Furman said construction to reopen the center began in earnest around Memorial Day weekend, and the center is currently in the pre-opening stage and accepting patients.

His staff includes three therapists and Chelsea Page, a medical physicist at the Colorado Associates in Medical Physics. Approved the treatment plan and said it was “our safety barrier.” Radiosurgery systems provide precise treatment and help maintain healthy tissue around the treatment area. Additionally, “treatment can be delivered in fewer sessions, as little as two weeks in some cancers,” the press release said.
