  • UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography is set to unveil the Ted and Jean Scripps Marine Conservation and Technology Facility which including cutting-edge laboratories, space for developing and testing new marine instruments, as well as a research aquarium that will contain live organisms from multiple habitats. The facility will be home to the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation.
  • The 24,269-square-foot building, designed by Safdie Rabines Architects, includes a 100-seat lecture hall, two class laboratories, conference rooms, and an additional 10 research labs. The research aquarium will use water pumped from the Pacific Ocean through the Scripps Pier seawater system. The building is designed to encourage collaboration and learning about the ocean and human interactions with the sea.
  • The facility’s opening is a significant milestone for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, representing a new era for marine conservation and technology. The Ted and Jean Scripps Marine Conservation and Technology Facility has undergone a few revisions and community reviews in the past few years, but it is finally ready to be open to the public.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego has recently unveiled its latest facility in partnership with UCSD, the Marine Conservation and Technology Facility. The new facility is expected to make significant contributions to the field of marine conservation and technology, providing state-of-the-art research and educational resources to scientists, students, and the community.

The Marine Conservation and Technology Facility is designed as a hub for cutting-edge research and interdisciplinary collaboration, aimed at understanding the complex challenges facing oceans and marine ecosystems. The facility boasts a variety of features, including a wet lab, an engineering workshop, and a tank testing facility.

The wet lab is specially designed for marine research and includes seawater tables, tanks, and other equipment to support experiments and observations. The engineering workshop is equipped with modern technologies, such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines, that aid in the creation of new oceanographic instruments. Lastly, the tank testing facility is designed to simulate oceanic conditions, making it possible to test new instruments, sensors, and vehicles in a controlled environment.

According to Margaret Leinen, Vice Chancellor for Marine Sciences at UC San Diego and Director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Marine Conservation and Technology Facility brings together a diverse group of researchers and students who are passionate about marine conservation and technology.

“We envision this facility as a hub of innovation, collaboration, and education that will inspire and equip the next generation of marine conservationists and technologists,” said Leinen.

The new center is also expected to advance UCSD’s mission of being a world leader in research and education. By providing state-of-the-art facilities and resources, the Marine Conservation and Technology Facility is poised to attract top-level researchers, students, and institutions from around the world.

Overall, the unveiling of Scripps Institution of Oceanography’s Marine Conservation and Technology Facility is a significant step forward in advancing our understanding of our oceans and the need for their conservation. It is an exciting development for researchers, students, the community, and the world at large.
