Microsoft is introducing Dolby Vision game support to its Xbox Series X/S consoles today. This feature has been in testing since May and will be available in over 100 HDR games in the future. Xbox has supported the HDR10 standard for years, but Dolby Vision Gaming was the first to arrive on Xbox consoles, adding support for dynamic metadata. According to Microsoft, this should result in “brighter highlights, sharper contrast, and more vibrant colors.”

Developers can choose to integrate Dolby Vision into their game engine or take advantage of Dolby Vision technology built within the Xbox developer platform. Games that use Auto HDR aren’t true Dolby Vision games, but Microsoft says they can take advantage of Xbox’s Dolby Vision mapping technology to display more accurate images on Dolby Vision TVs. A compatible Dolby Vision TV is required to take advantage of this new feature on Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Microsoft also recommends enabling Automatic Low Latency Mode (ALLM). Dolby Vision is compatible with ALLM, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and 120Hz games. You can check if your TV supports Dolby Vision in Settings > General > TV and display options > 4K TV details. In this case, you can enable Dolby Vision gaming support in Settings > General > TV & display options > Video mode > Dolby Vision for games. A recent TV firmware update may be required to enable Dolby Vision or 120Hz mode.
