- BMC successfully repaired a 30-year-old pipeline on Khairani Road at Kurla (West) using cured in place pipe (CIPP) technology. The entire 800-meter length of the water main was strengthened and completed by March 27.
- CIPP technology provides a cost-effective and efficient way to rehabilitate existing pipelines without excavation while minimizing the environmental impact of pipeline repair work.
- The successful completion of the Khairani Road pipeline repair work demonstrates BMC’s commitment to finding innovative solutions to complex problems and improving the quality of life for residents in Mumbai.
Mumbai, India – The Cured-in-place Pipe (CIPP) technology, a form of trenchless sewer repair, was recently deployed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to fix a dilapidated pipeline that runs along Khairani Road in Mumbai. The project, which began in February 2021, has been deemed a success after the CIPP technology proved to be very effective in repairing the pipeline.
The Khairani Road pipeline had been causing a major inconvenience to the residents in the area due to its poor condition, which led to frequent sewage blockages and overflows. The BMC decided to use the CIPP method to avoid the need for excavating the existing pipeline, which would cause a lot of traffic disruption and environmental damage.
In the CIPP process, a flexible liner is inserted inside the pipeline, which is then cured in place using heat or ultraviolet light. The liner hardens and forms a new, seamless pipeline within the existing one, restoring it to its original capacity and structural integrity.
The BMC used this method to repair the Khairani Road pipeline and it was completed in just two weeks. The CIPP technology proved to be highly effective in reducing the traffic disruptions and noise pollution, which would have otherwise been caused by excavation work. Furthermore, the residents can now enjoy a clean and healthy environment, as the pipeline has been restored to its proper functioning condition.
BMC officials have expressed their satisfaction with the outcome of the CIPP project and are now considering using the technology for future pipeline repairs across Mumbai. This successful project marks a significant milestone in the implementation of sustainable and efficient infrastructure solutions in our cities.
