  • The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has repaired a 30-year-old pipeline on Khairani Road using cured in place pipe (CIPP) technology. The project required 10 days to complete and involved conducting one-day isolation on Saturdays over a period of 10 weeks to minimize disruption. The entire 800-meter length of the water main was successfully strengthened and completed by March 27.
  • The pipeline had faced multiple bursts due to its old and deteriorated condition, making replacement unfeasible due to the narrow road, heavy traffic, and presence of utilities. CIPP technology was therefore used to strengthen the inner part of the water channel and prolong the life of the pipeline, a trenchless rehabilitation technique that involves inserting a resin-saturated liner into a damaged pipe and curing it in place.
  • The use of CIPP technology has not only saved time and money but has also reduced the inconvenience caused to residents and traffic in the area. The successful completion of the project is a testament to BMC’s commitment to providing uninterrupted and clean water supply to the residents of Mumbai and encourages other municipalities to adopt similar technologies to repair and rehabilitate their pipelines.

In a bid to improve the water distribution system in the city, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has successfully implemented Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) technology to restore deteriorated pipelines on Khairani Road, a major arterial road in Mumbai.

The project, which was carried out in collaboration with a leading water infrastructure solutions provider, involved the rehabilitation of a 1.5 km-long stretch of pipeline, which had been severely damaged due to corrosion and other factors.

CIPP technology involves the insertion of a flexible fabric liner into damaged pipelines, which is then inflated and cured using heat or UV light, creating a new, seamless pipe within the old one. This method eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming excavation, reducing disruption to the surrounding community and the environment.

The CIPP solution used by BMC was specifically designed to withstand the harsh conditions and high traffic volume of Khairani Road and meet the stringent quality standards of the water distribution industry.

The successful completion of this project has not only improved the reliability and safety of the city’s water supply but also saved BMC significant time and cost in pipeline replacement and repairs.

BMC has been proactive in adopting innovative solutions to address the challenges of aging water infrastructure and ensure a sustainable and reliable supply of safe drinking water for Mumbai’s growing population. The success of this project highlights the potential of CIPP technology as a cost-effective and efficient solution for pipeline rehabilitation in the future.
