Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, promised to deliver results soon after pulling engineers from other projects to work on developing a competing AI chatbot-powered search. Pichai stated in a statement, “I’m excited by the AI-driven leaps we’re about to unveil in search and beyond.”

The two main revenue streams for Google are online search and advertising. Internally, there are concerns that OpenAI’s GPT-4 could be threatened by Microsoft’s decision to integrate it into the Bing search engine.

LaMDA, a Google AI model, will be made available “in the coming weeks and months,” according to Pichai, who also promised that language models will soon be usable “as a companion to search.” The Verge has received an invite to a live event on February 8 where it will be revealed how AI-powered search has been integrated into Google Search, Maps, and more.

“The power of AI to reimagine how people search for, explore, and interact with information, making it more natural and intuitive than ever before to find what you need,” according to the presentation’s description, will be made clear.

Transport authorities in San Francisco are wary of driverless cars on the road, but the fleets of Cruise and Waymo are traveling farther than ever.

In San Francisco, fully autonomous vehicles operated by Cruise and Waymo have been involved in at least 92 incidents since the second half of 2022. Without any drivers in the front, the cars have abruptly stopped in lanes, backed up traffic, and come dangerously close to colliding with local firefighters’ water hoses. While Waymo only makes this service available to a select group of employees and their friends, Cruise operates a public robotaxi service that covers some areas of the city at night.

Some passengers have become unresponsive, prompting Cruise to call for emergency assistance, only to discover that they had dozed off during the ride. In order to reduce the number of accidents on its roads, the San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA) urged the California Public Utilities Commission to delay the approval of more driverless vehicles. It is unclear whether the authorities will follow the SFCTA’s recommendation. According to data provided by both businesses, as they increase the number of driverless services they offer in the city, their vehicles are clocking more and more miles.

According to The Verge, Cruise’s robotaxis traveled 26,838 miles in all from September to November 2022, while Waymo’s driverless cars traveled 3,057 miles in the same period.
